“Modern Black History Makers”
DOOR DECORATION CONTEST
RHS Celebrates Black History Month 2022
Over the years, we have learned about all the historical figures that are normally celebrated during Black History Month. These influential people have paved the way for current and future generations. So this year for Black History Month, we will shift our focus to honor the “Modern Black History Makers” that have continued to build upon those advancements and are continuing to pave the way for the next generation. We honor those before us by continuing to build toward a future that embodies all they have worked for.
- Each Homeroom class worked together to research and select an influential African American who has made a significant impact on the world from 1970 - present. *Clarification: They can be born before this time, with a contribution made after 1970.
- To represent as many people as possible, selections were approved on a first come, first served basis and limited to 5 people per genre: Entertainment, Sports, Government/Politics, Health/Medicine, Education/Academia, Business/Industry, Technology, International Influence, Humanities.
- On Friday, Feb. 4th during 2nd hour, teachers and students submit their selections for approval via a Google Form. Teachers displayed a live Google Doc/Slide to their class which allowed everyone to see which homerooms will be representing each person of honor in real time.
- Door Decorations were completed no later than Friday, February 18th.
- Each homeroom selected a representative to present their door to a committee of judges (made up of community members) and/or be interviewed by Rayne Alive! for a special edition episode.
- Winners were selected for each homeroom classification (Fr, So, Jr, Sr) and will receive a breakfast party. One class door was selected as the Overall School Winner and won class competition points. There was also a "Student's Choice Award" selected by RHS Student Council.
- The last week of February, homerooms conducted a school-wide gallery walk during 2nd hour to view all of the decorations.
