The History of Mire Elementary
Located at the southeastern corner of the intersection of highway 95 and highway 98 is Mire Elementary. The history of this school dates back to 1922 when several small rural neighborhood schools were combined to establish Mier Consolidated School.
Many children of that era spoke only French but they were not allowed to do so in school. Teachers had to teach English to them in addition to the normal school curriculum.
One very special teacher in the history of Mire Elementary was Miss Louise Petitjean. She started teaching at Mire Elementary in 1927. She was a first grade teacher, and she often used the Sears Catalogue to help her students learn how to read. Her kind demeanor helped her to establish special relationships with her students. She was honored when she retired in 1970 after 43 years as a classroom teacher.
In 1938 a new school was constructed replacing the antiquated "one room" buildings at a cost of $58,124.00. The new school had 10 classrooms and a gymnasium. In 1973 the name of the school was changed from Mier to Mire to be closely associated with Mire Church and Mire Community.
Mire has had eight principals:
